Air Filters Explained

MERV ratings, static pressure, and change intervals — how filters really work in Kitsap HVAC systems.
Eagle Pipe Mechanical

Air filters explained simply: they protect equipment and reduce particles, but the “best” filter is the highest MERV your system can move air through — not the highest number on the package.

What MERV actually measures

MERV rates particle capture efficiency. Higher is not automatically better if your blower cannot overcome the resistance. Undersized returns and dirty coils compound the problem. Eagle Pipe checks static pressure before recommending a media upgrade.

Filter types common on the peninsula

1-inch panels are cheap and need frequent changes. 4–5 inch media cabinets hold more dirt with less pressure spike. Electrostatic and washable claims vary — follow manufacturer and tech guidance. Smoke seasons may justify temporary strategy changes.

Change intervals that match real life

Pets, remodeling, alder pollen, and wildfire ash shorten life. A written schedule beats a vague “every 90 days.” Membership visits catch filters crushed, backwards, or bypassing around a loose fit.

Filters are not a full IAQ plan

They do not fix humidity, combustion issues, or crawl mold. Pair filtration with ventilation and moisture control for Mechanical Home results.

What goes wrong when homeowners wait

Oversized MERV on a weak system causes freeze-ups and comfort complaints. Never-changing filters load coils and raise energy use. Spraying chemicals into ducts without filtration strategy creates residue without lasting improvement.

Local proof and how Eagle Pipe approaches it

Eagle Pipe membership and tune-ups include filter verification against blower capacity — part of dual-licensed Mechanical Home care from a woman-owned Poulsbo team.

What to do next

See Duct Cleaning Facts and membership for ongoing filter discipline, or contact us if airflow already feels weak.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a HEPA furnace filter?

True HEPA usually needs a dedicated cabinet or portable unit. Forcing HEPA-rated panels into a standard slot often harms airflow.

Which way does the arrow face?

Toward the furnace/air handler — with airflow. Backwards filters bypass and load unevenly.

Do filters help with odors?

Standard particle filters do little for odors; carbon stages or source control are needed.
